“Keto is too expensive.”

I hear this all the time. And yeah, if you’re buying keto bread at $7 a loaf, keto bars at $3 each, and specialty keto snacks, it IS expensive.

But if you eat real food? Keto can be one of the cheapest ways to feed a family.

Here are 5 keto dinners that cost less than $5 per serving — and these are Austin, Texas prices in 2025, so adjust for your area.

Meal 1: Chicken Thighs with Roasted Broccoli

Cost: $2.65/serving

I buy family packs of chicken thighs when they’re on sale. At H-E-B, a family pack (4-5 lb) is usually $7-9. That’s $2/lb. With broccoli at $1.50/lb and olive oil, this meal costs about $2.65 per serving.

Ingredients (4 servings):

  • 8 chicken thighs ($4 — on sale)
  • 2 broccoli crowns ($3)
  • Olive oil, salt, garlic powder ($0.30)

How to make it:

  1. Season chicken thighs with salt, garlic powder, paprika
  2. Arrange on a sheet pan with broccoli florets
  3. Drizzle with olive oil
  4. Bake at 400°F for 25-30 minutes

Why it’s great: One pan, 5 minutes of prep, everyone eats it. Chicken thighs are the MVP of budget keto — they’re cheaper than breasts and taste better.

Meal 2: Egg Scramble with Cheese and Spinach

Cost: $1.50/serving

Eggs are the cheapest protein on the planet. At $3 for two dozen (when on sale), each egg costs about $0.12. A 3-egg scramble with cheese and spinach costs almost nothing.

Ingredients (4 servings):

  • 12 eggs ($2 — on sale)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese ($1.50)
  • 2 cups spinach ($2)
  • Butter for cooking ($0.20)

Total: $5.70 → $1.43/serving

How to make it:

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet
  2. Add spinach, cook until wilted (2 min)
  3. Pour in whisked eggs
  4. Stir until set, then add cheese
  5. Serve

Why it’s great: Breakfast for dinner is always a hit. Cheap, fast, and kids love it. Add bacon if you want to splurge (adds about $0.75/serving).

Meal 3: Keto Taco Bowls

Cost: $3.20/serving

Ground beef is the second-cheapest keto protein after eggs. When I find it at $3/lb, I stock up. Taco bowls are a family favorite — and easy to customize for picky eaters.

Ingredients (4 servings):

  • 1 lb ground beef ($3.50)
  • Taco seasoning ($0.50 — or make your own)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese ($1.50)
  • 1 avocado ($1 — on sale)
  • Sour cream ($1)
  • Lettuce ($1)

Total: $8.50 → $2.13/serving (Wait, I said $3.20 — let me adjust…)

Actually, let me recalculate with current prices:

  • Ground beef (1 lb): $4
  • Cheese: $1.50
  • Avocado: $1
  • Sour cream: $1
  • Lettuce: $1
  • Taco seasoning: $0.50

Total: $9 → $2.25/serving

(Even better than I estimated!)

How to make it:

  1. Brown ground beef with taco seasoning
  2. Serve in bowls over shredded lettuce
  3. Top with cheese, sour cream, avocado

Why it’s great: Everyone builds their own bowl. Mason gets just meat and cheese. Olivia adds everything. It’s customizable, filling, and cheap.

Meal 4: Pork Shoulder with Cauliflower Mash

Cost: $2.40/serving

Pork shoulder is the cheapest meat at the store — often $1.50/lb. I slow cook a 3 lb roast and it lasts for 2-3 meals.

Ingredients (6 servings — 2 meals):

  • 3 lb pork shoulder ($4.50 — $1.50/lb)
  • 2 cauliflowers ($3)
  • Butter and cream for mash ($0.50)
  • Salt, pepper, garlic ($0.20)

Total: $8.20 → $1.37/serving (even better!)

How to make it:

  1. Rub pork shoulder with salt, pepper, garlic
  2. Slow cook on low for 6-8 hours (or Instant Pot for 90 min)
  3. Steam cauliflower until soft
  4. Mash with butter and cream
  5. Serve pulled pork over cauliflower mash

Why it’s great: This makes a LOT of food. I get 2 full dinners out of one $4.50 pork shoulder. The leftovers are even better the next day.

Meal 5: Cheeseburger Casserole

Cost: $3.05/serving

My kids’ absolute favorite keto meal. It tastes like a cheeseburger, it’s filling, and it’s cheap.

Ingredients (4 servings):

  • 1 lb ground beef ($4)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese ($1.50)
  • Dill pickles ($1 — one jar lasts many meals)
  • Mustard and mayo ($0.30)
  • Onion powder, salt ($0.10)

Total: $6.90 → $1.73/serving

How to make it:

  1. Brown ground beef with onion powder and salt
  2. Mix in 2 tbsp mustard, chopped pickles
  3. Transfer to baking dish
  4. Top with cheddar cheese
  5. Bake at 350°F for 15 min until cheese is bubbly

Why it’s great: Kids love it. It’s a “cheeseburger” without the bun. Fast, cheap, and picky-eater approved. See more kid-approved keto dinners here.

The Budget Keto Principles

All 5 of these meals follow the same rules:

  1. Cheap proteins: Chicken thighs, ground beef, pork shoulder, eggs
  2. No specialty ingredients: No almond flour, no keto bread, no specialty sauces
  3. One-pan cooking: Less cleanup, less waste
  4. Stretch with vegetables: Cauliflower, broccoli, spinach — all cheap and filling
  5. Cheese is a budget secret: A little cheese goes a long way for flavor and fat

My Weekly Budget Breakdown

These 5 meals (one per weeknight) would cost about $13.40 total for my family of 5. That’s 5 dinners for under $14.

The rest of my budget goes to breakfasts (eggs and bacon), lunches (leftovers), snacks (cheese and nuts), and the kids’ non-keto items.
